Christmas Crafts with Auntie Lisa

This blog is an update from before Xmas when the boys did a Christmas Craft session with Auntie Lisa to allow me and Tina some valuable Xmas shopping time. So on this rare occasion I hand the blog text and pictures over to little Sis.

Josh is very able now and is quite happy to get on with things himself which I was really impressed with. He was very good with finding patterns understanding that you needed to feel for texture and that if it was bumpy it would make a nice rubbing on the paper. Brandon liked the painting and getting messy, he has asked to do a big painting next time - so I hope you have a space on the wall reserved.

First the boys made some reindeer's. For this they did a rubbing of the bottom of their shoe for the reindeer head, we talked about textures and finding ones that would give a good pattern whilst we were doing this. Then I drew around their hands and they ran around the house finding patterns to rub over to fill the hands up. They loved this (- and top tip for you, if you are out and about and want to do something creative take a couple of sheets of paper and some crayons and let them do this. You will then have a nice piece of art to represent the day that can be framed or cut up and made into an image that says something about where you have been, a great little thing for scrapbooks). Once they had filled them out I cut them out and they glued them together. Then a bit of finger painting for the eyes and nose and hey presto a Rudolph. What was lovely about this was that we found some Christmas songs on the ipad and played these and all sat at the table merrily singing whilst making the reindeer's - lovely.

Bead wreaths next, great for the hand eye co-ordination, counting and patience! The boys chose what colour pipe cleaner they wanted to use and then had to could out 30 beads - which we did as two lots of 15 with a little help from Amy and mum. They then threaded the beads onto the pipe cleaner with a bell, twisted the top and ta-da a nice little handmade dec for the tree which gave me time to sort out the table for the next craft. They made a couple of these but I think If I did this again I would get better pipe cleaners and beads with slightly larger holes in them as Brandon found this a little tricky and Josh's pipe cleaner kept going squiffy at the end. But they both completed them with very little support!

I was really impressed with how much the boys remember from Wat Tyler on how to make the Christmas Trees. I told them we were going to do Santa and an Elf, they chose which one they wanted to do and then we sat and rolled the paper together with the boys gluing and singing as we went. Josh pretty much rolled and glued his himself. They is was decoration time, gluing on eyes and noses, josh showed off his cutting skills and used a hole punch to cut out the shapes for the beard and moustache for Santa and Brandon decided he only wanted green pom poms on his elf and glued these on along with the ears, nose and eyes.

A great day, thank you for letting us have them. I tried to make sure they did not get too much mess on themselves.
