Holly's 4th Birthday

It hardly seems believable, but today was our little Princess Holly's 4th birthday. It has been really amazing this year as it is the first year that she has really understood that it was her special day and that she was going to be getting presents, cards, cakes and so on. She knows that she is 4 years old and can hold up 4 fingers to show her age as well. When she woke up this morning she was so excited to go and see how many presents she had and needed no help in unwrapping them either.

This year we asked Holly what she wanted for her birthday and all she kept saying was stuff for her babies. She didn't want anything for herself, just all her dolls!!!! I love Holly to bits and was probably just as excited as her for her special day, but I do struggle with enthusiasm when it comes to playing with dolls!!!! Anyway she got a set of twin dolls that she has named Robby and Rosie, a double buggy for the twins, a bunk bed for the twins, a clamp on table for her dolls to sit at the dinner table, a puzzle book, a talking Peppa Pig teddy, a bike chair for her dolls plus loads of presents and money from the family. Holly's birthday cake this year was a My Little Pony cake.

After opening all of her presents Holly had to go to Tree House nursery today and they gave her an amazing day at school and also sang Happy Birthday to her. Then after school she had a visit by Nanny, Auntie Nicky, Min, Lea, Zoe and Nick. We do have a Build-a-Bear party booked for her friends but that is in a couple of weekends time - so something for her to look forward too before Xmas.

Joshua made up a special birthday message for Holly.

All the presents, cards and balloons ready for when Holly wakes up in the morning.

What's wrong with the child, opening the cards before the presents????

Maybe she was right to open the cards first as she got a total of £40 in cash.

Lovely cheeky picture with a giant "4" badge for her to wear to school.

Holly screamed out a big "Yeh" when she opened up her talking Peppa Pig teddy.

Action shot as Holly tears in to her presents.

Joshua shows Holly her amazing Princess jigsaw puzzle book.

Holly's new twins which she has named Rosie and Robbie.

Lily Anna now has her very own chair at the dinner table. Not a good idea as Holly spent all dinner time trying to get her doll to eat rather than eating her own dinner.

Holly seemed to forget she had to eat herself and was teaching her doll to eat and to dab!

Holly doing the school run with her twins in her new double stroller.

Holly with her bunk bed so that her dolls have somewhere to sleep at night. She even makes them climb the ladder to get to the top bunk.

4 Today.

Happy birthday to our little H-Bomb.

Holly's Happy Princess Birthday balloon.

For her 4th birthday Holly had a My Little Pony cake.

Singing happy birthday to their little sister.

When the family came around later in the day we lit the candle again and sung happy birthday to her again. Notice her new Princess PJ's from Auntie Lisa and David.

1st Visit to Santa (well Mrs Claus) in 2017

Last night the kiddies all got to make their first visit to Santa for 2017 - only it wasn't Mr Claus, but instead Mrs Claus. Apparently Mr Claus bailed on the boys school for their annual Xmas school fete and at the last minute they had to recruit a Mrs Claus!! Holly asked Mrs Claus for stuff for her babies, Brandon asked for a BMX (which he already has!) and Joshua asked for the Game Of Life. As a little present they all got a gift bag from Mrs Claus with a mug that they can paint, a hot chocolate cone and some sweets. I am sure the boys will get to catch up with Santa sometime over the next 4 weeks.

Joshu, Brandon and Holly with Mrs Claus at the Abacus School Xmas Fete, don't ask why Joshua's school shirt is wet (but it involved slime!).

BPSC Annual Championships Part.1

On Friday Brandon competed in the first part of the Basildon and Phoenix Swimming Club annual championships. So we ended up down the pool for about 4 hours to watch Brandon in the 50m freestyle and the 50m back stroke. He did very well and came 4th in the freestyle receiving a 4th place medal and then he came 9th in the back stroke which isn't one of his strongest strokes. What really pleased was that even with the 9th place finish on the back stroke Brandon found a positive in his performance. After the race he came up to me and said "I did better than last year Dad as I didn't get disqualified!". So true, last year he turned on to his front just before touching the wall and was so upset that he was disqualified. I remember saying to him after the race last year to make sure he learned from his mistakes and never do it again - and he didn't. So really proud of him.

This is only part 1 of the championships though as next Friday he is back in the pool for part 2 which will be much busier for him as he is entered in to 6 races!!!

Some more good news with Brandon's swimming is that we just received an email saying he has shown significant improvement and is being moved from the Academy green hat to yellow hat.

Brandon ready for the off on the 50m freestyle. He said he had a problem with his goggles and was worried they would come off if he dived in off the board, hence why he is starting in the pool.

Proudly showing his 1st medal of the championships with a cheesy false smile!

Summerhill Beats Altons Xmas Display

This weekend just gone we did our annual viewing of the two main garden centres near us in order to check out the 2017 Xmas displays. For the last few years Alton's has won decisively which some absolutely amazing displays and as such on Saturday we decided to go to there first. This year was extremely disappointing though to the point where I didn't even bother taking any pictures! Sunday was the turn of Summerhill and by stark contrast to Alton's, Summerhill had some pretty amazing displays and in our opinion beat their arch rival hands down  Anyway here are a few pictures from Summerhill Xmas 2017 display.

If only my lounge decorations looked that good.

Little Holly dwarfed in the rocking chair.

Knock, knock, will these light up door bows be the big thing for 2017.

Holly loved all the displays but couldn't stop touching!!! By some miracle we didn't break anything.

Josh and Holly in Mrs Claus kitchen with Holly wearing some gingerbread glasses.

Now that's a Royal Essex Christmas with 3 Kings in the picture (well 2 kings and a princess!).

The miniature scenery display was pretty amazing.

And how about this, the Summerhill Santa Express.

Uncle Steven's 60th Birthday Meal at Grand Central

Last night we had the pleasure of celebrating Uncle Steven's 60th birthday at the Grand Central restaurant in Basildon along with a load of the family. This was the first time we have been to Grand Central since it was re branded from the Outback and the food was pretty good, although I do miss the "Bloomin' Onion" and the "Bread" from the old Outback menu! Anyway we had a lovely evening and its always good to see all the kiddies together as well. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we even participated in something they call "Fone Free Friday" and all put our phones in a sealed envelope during the meal and as a reward they give you 10% discount off of your meal. What a great idea? Here are a few pictures from the evening.

All the family in Grand Central celebrating Uncle Steven's 60th.

Brandon had to rush straight to the restaurant from Chelsea training and still had his thermals on under his shirt.

Auntie Shahinah won the award for the biggest dish with this monster meat feast plate!

Joshua true to form and with an empty plate in front of him.

Well done to Dad and Diane for organising the birthday meal.

Little Duckling Stage 3

Yesterday Holly passed her little duckling Stage 3 swimming certificate. She is really progressing well with her swimming now and absolutely loves her the weekly lessons. However, at times she can be a bit mischievous when her and her friend get together at swimming and they start messing around a bit and not listening to their teacher!!!!

Holly proudly shows her Little Duckling Stage 3 Certificate.

Blush

Later this week is the BBC Children in Need day which as everyone knows is all about raising funds to make a difference to disadvantaged children and young people all across the UK. The mascot for Children in Need is Pudsey Bear who has been around since 1985 when he made his debut alongside Terry Wogan. Despite Children in Need being around for so long it was completely unknown to me that in 2009 Pudsey had been joined by another female bear named “Blush” who has a spotty bow with a pattern similar to Pudsey’s bandanna pattern.

So why am I writing about this on the blog? Well because Holly came home from her pre-school yesterday and was very proud of the fact that her face had been painted to look like “Blush”. She then spent the rest of the evening trying to wipe the face paint off on our skin and clothes!

Pudesy and Blush.

Brandon's 1st Exhibition Boxing Event

At the weekend Brandon was invited to his boxing club to participate in a little exhibition at the start of their Memorial boxing event against the Marines. I have been to professional boxing events in the past, but this was my first amateur boxing event and was a real eye opener for me as to the seriousness and the culture of amateur boxing events. The Billericay and Wickford boxing club had completely transformed itself to put on the show for a crowd of up to 500 people. The training floors were all covered up, ring lighting, chairs and barriers set up, Marine bunting and flags everywhere, catering for food/drinks set-up, security gazebo outside with metal detection and searches, ring side judge seating and round bell, pa system, medical crew on hand, ring announcers, proper referees with latex gloves etc.etc. It amazed me the amount of time, effort, money and organising that goes in to putting on an amateur event.

This picture doesn't do justice to the amount of effort and the transformation of the gym to support the event.

You can see why the security is very important at these events when you look at the culture of an amateur boxing event and the necessity for crown control when things start getting a bit rowdy. Maybe I am stereotyping the people that go to these events, but I have never seen so many balding, meat head, flat nosed people in one venue before. Loads of flat caps, tattoos and everyone seemingly appearing to be eyeing up everyone else. As an outsider having never been to an amateur boxing event it can definitely be a bit intimidating and that’s coming from someone who has done karate for 25+ years!!!

Before the event started the MC introduced all of the young lads from the development squad of Billericay and Wickford boxing club which included Brandon. It was a great experience for them to have their name called out and to climb up in the ring under the lights in front of a packed out crowd. They then had the little ones run through a series of little training drills doing sit-ups, press-ups, shadow boxing and so on. So no real fighting, no contact, just a good opportunity to get them in a ring and in front of a crowd.

Brandon all ready for his boxing exhibition.
After the exhibition the event really kicked in to action with a military style trumpet player signalling the minutes silence and then the national anthem being played. All the fighters from local clubs that were taking on the Marines where then brought in to the ring to square off and exchange pre-fight gifts (which looked like a plaque). Once all the intros and  exchanges were completed with the carded fighters, the show started with some of the junior boxers participating in what is called a “skills contest”. These boys must have been about 10/11 years old and basically did 3x1min rounds. We couldn’t stay for long as I had Holly with me, but Brandon wanted to stay and watch one fight. It was funny sitting with him as he asked me if there would be lots of blood! Anyway the junior boxers were very respectful to the ref and the opposing fighters corner team which was nice to see, then the bell rang and we witnessed a very fast paced 3x1min with both kids giving it their all. At the end of the fight there is no winner or loser as it is a skills contest and both fighters have their hand raised.

After watching the fight the realisation set in that this will be the next progression for Brandon and it really starts to get you thinking about how you would feel and react when one of your own is in the ring. It even crossed my mind that I am not sure whether I would want to watch one of Brandon’s fights but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. As we were leaving I asked Brandon whether he thinks he is up to one of these 3x1min skills contests and he said yes, so I guess his boxing journey continues for a bit longer……. nervous times ahead.

Roman Day at Abacus for Brandon

Brandon has been learning about Roman's at school lately and last week his year had a Roman dress up day. Tina managed to get him a Roman costume for the day but I have to say that Brandon was not completely sold on this one. I think he was worried it was a bit of a girlie dress and the only way we could get him to wear it was with thermals underneath.

Bonoween 2017

A little bit late with this blog update regarding our annual Bonoween event which took place last weekend. The event was changed up a bit this year with the venue being moved from our’s to Nicky’s and also Auntie Chris, Steve and Layla joined us as they were down for the weekend to extend Holly’s bedroom. Everyone made an effort to dress up and looked amazing. Nicky hosted very well and had some really scrummy Halloween recipes of which the top pick and winner has to be the stuffed peppers (which I really must get the recipe for).

Joshua can claim the 2017 pumpkin carving champion dethroning his Dad (previous multi-time champion!). Although his pumpkin had actually gone really mouldy as it was carved a week earlier and subsequently he had to make a photo submission. We skipped the pumpkin throwing competition this year, although Joshua did throw one of Holly’s smaller pumpkins out on the path which then drew the attention of a very tame and very hungry fox. We had all the usual fun with sparklers and then Uncle Steve decided he wanted some fireworks so we headed out and got a £60 box of fireworks which the kids seemed to really enjoy (not sure Nicky’s dogs were too grateful though). We also managed to send up a nice big rocket and a few Chinese lanterns in memory of Mum.

We 5 King's all dressed up for Bonoween.
