Bulgaria Sunny Beach 2023 - Day 9 Old Town Nessebar

On Day 9 we took a taxi down to the Old Town Nessebar which should have only been a 30 min taxi ride that turned out to be an hour due to a crash on the main road leading along Sunny Beach. Nessebar was founded over 3000 years ago and is now a UNESCO protected city which is believed to be the oldest in Europe. The cobbled streets and 44 churches in Old Nessebar are now considered a museum city with a real medieval vibe to it.

Once you arrive at the old town of Nessebar you are greeter by a large statue at the port, a windmill and then the walls to the city. To get to the old town you cross a small bridge from the new Nessebar and from there you can easily explore the city on foot. You can literally walk from one side to the other in under 10 mins and probably the complete circumference in not much more than 30 mins.

As well as all the churches, old Nessebar is packed with shops, museums, cafes, restaurants and some stunning coast line. We pretty much spent the whole day there and had lunch in an amazing little restaurant overlooking one of the cove type beaches.

It was a little overcast in the morning and when we stopped for lunch there was a surprising downpour of rain, but other than that little blip the skies did clear and we had some lovely sunny weather to explore the town and get loads of great pictures.

The statue that greets you at the Old Town of Nessebar.

Tina and H in the picture give you an idea of its size.

A section of the old stone walls at the old town of Nessebar.

Bulgarian, EU, UNESCO and Nessebar City flags around one of the turrets.

A bit of the port looking back at the old town.

Holly having an explore (yes still wearing her Inter Miami football kit)!

Old Nessebar is tiny and yet it has some 44 churches.

Most of the old town has beautiful old cobbled streets.

Just one of the 44 churches.

Some of the churches are restored to Museum quality, other are just stone ruins.

The sign said no photography inside the church but Brandon sneaked a couple of shots on his phone.

And another one from inside one of the churches.

Me and the kids lit 3 candles in memory of Mum, Slim and Paul. A bit of an emotional moment especially for Brandon.

Tina exploring Old Nessebar.

Every street you turn down just oozes character at encourages you to explore.

An old carriage.

More of the many churches.

Some are partial ruins.

Me and wifey in Old Nessebar.

Then Holly wanted in on the action.

Exploring some old ruins.

Beer shop with a shark, say no more.

Outside one of the restaurants.

That boat looks a but safer.

The clouds started to clear as we explored the South coast of Old Nessebar.

Look closely and you can see Brandon.

Josh and Tina didn't want any of this little adventure.

A restaurant on a ship deck overlooking the Black Sea.

One of the beautiful little bays on Old Nessebar.

Crystal clear waters was just too much of a temptation for a little cool off..

Just look at that water.

Buna Beach at Old Nessebar.

The arches over on the North side.

Me and B climbed up to see who could get the best picture.

More old ruins.

Sneaky selfie walking down some of the cobbled streets to find somewhere for lunch.

Josh and Holly both wearing their Messi football shirts.

We added a pin to the map to show where we had travelled from.

Chilling and waiting for our lunch.

Now that is a nice view whilst having lunch.

Holly being silly with her braids.

After lunch we were off exploring again.

Another hidden gem of a church ruin in the middle of the town.

Brandon went in to explore further.

Followed by H and Josh.

Just beautiful.

Can you see a Holly?

At least one of the 3 kids were happy to pose for pictures.

Me and B.

What is left of this old church.

Tina off exploring again.

Humm, can we get Holly behind those bars????

Great brick work.

View on the South West of Old Nessebar.

She's determined to get inside.

Great views everywhere you look.

Mini lighthouse or some sort of lookout tower maybe?

One of the beaches at Old Nessebar.

Holly collecting some shells.

Is it an ancient McDonalds sign????

My ladies in Nessebar. Holly with a new fan she bought at one of the gift shops.

The iconic windmill at Old Nessebar which you see on so many postcards and fridge magnets.

Boys really fed up with my camera at this stage of the day so only Holly and Tina again.

Back at the hotel after dinner, Holly went off to burn some calories on a 30 min trampoline session.

She certainly came off of this thirsty and sweaty as it was still hot and clammy.

Holly with some gymnastics work on the rings.

Jumping off of a large block on to the trampoline below.

Taking a run up to traverse multiple trampolines.
