DTA (in business)

As parents you have a responsibility to pass on to your children as many of your life experiences as possible – albeit good or bad experiences. In the last few years the companies that both myself and Tina work for have gone through some pretty tough times with plant closures, redundancies and mergers. One common lesson between both our cases though is DTA – Don’t Trust Anyone (in business). Why? Well quite simply it is because of the old “extended” saying that “All is fair in love, war and business”!.

There are a rare few people in this world who value their ethics and friendships above all else and would not compromise their own integrity over their career or business. However there are also people who you consider to be your friends and colleagues that will happily stab you in the back with complete disregard for any moral or ethical beliefs in order to better their own career or standing within a company. In my case I was fortunate enough to overcome the situation and to date still work for the same company. Tina was not so fortunate and despite 9 committed and loyal years to the company, as of today she is now officially unemployed.

So my lesson to Joshua and Brandon is to look out for number 1 when it comes to your career and working life. Don’t trust anyone and do not for one minute think that someone else will be looking out for what is best for you. In business people will always look after number 1 / themselves first and if you do not take control of your own destiny, no one else will. It’s a shark eat shark environment out there in the big wide world of work.
