Isle of Wight Day 3 - The Needles and the Old Battery

Day 3 of our holiday was arguably our best day of the week as we drove over to the furthest point on the island to visit the famous Needles and the English Heritage Old Battery. The Needles has not changed much from what I remember but still makes for a fab day out. The kids had a go on a few rides, played a round of crazy golf, made some sand sculptures, went up and down the cable cars, watched some sweets and glass being made and so much more.

We spent a bit of time down on the beach but the water seemed much too cold to enter, except for nut case Josh who obviously stripped off and jumped in for a swim!!! Once we had finished all the activities at the Needles we took a really nice 3/4s mile walk along the cliff edge to get to the Old Battery. This is probably the closest you can get to viewing the needles plus you get to see some old armoury and the light house and foghorn etc. We even went through a deep dark tunnel under the battery to get to the lighthouse. The Old Battery was finished off perfectly with a nice cream tea and scone followed by a nice walk back taking in the breath taking views and the multitude of different coloured rock formations and sands.

Day 4 and we went to the furthest part of the island to visit the Needles.

Quick selfie of me and Holly on the cable car heading down to the bay.

Stunning views from up the top of the cliffs.

The drop off as the cable car hits the steep drop off to take you down to the bay.

Nearly there.....

Holly chuckling away as we come down the cable car.

The beach at the Needles along with the 500 odd steps to get back up if you didn't bother paying for a return ticket.

Joshua and Brandon with the Needles in the background.

Josh was the ONLY nutcase to venture in to the sea.

A bit of sand art as we leave a memento of the Kings trip to the IOW.

And an added heart shape just for Holly.

Time to head back up the cliffs and Joshua rides solo.

Holly decides to ride with Mummy on the way back leaving me with B.

Off go Josh, Tina and Holly.

Selfie of me and B on the chair lift.

The view looking out across to the Needles and the light house.

Holly having some fun on the tea cups.

Crazy golf seemed to be a bit of a common theme everywhere we went on the IOW. Brandon was getting some good scores.

Holly started to get the hang of crazy golf but usually by the end of the round she would be kicking her ball rather than using the putter.

Josh was getting frustrated as he keeps hitting the ball too hard and not waiting until everyone has cleared the hole before taking his shot!

More dinosaur theme on this crazy golf course as Holly sits on a rather large bone.

Yeeeehhhhh, she got it in the hole.

Brandon making his coloured sand art at the Needles.

Tina helping Holly make her elephant sand art.

Look closely at this stained glass window and you just might see the kids behind it.

The sweet display was interested as we watched them make some cream and raspberry sweets which we then got to sample. Very nice.

The glass blowing was equally interesting, but boy was it hot in there.

As we walk along the cliffs to the old battery you can clearly see all the different coloured rocks and sands.

Another rare occasion where the two boys are getting along nicely!

Time to visit the old battery.

Josh and Holly hang out in a bomb shelter.

Through the secret tunnel to the light house room.

I hope no one is claustrophobic.

Holly doesn't need a fog horn to be loud!!!!

From the Old Battery you can get an amazing view of the Needles and the light house.

We 5 Kings at the Old Battery / Needles.

Joshua taking a leap of faith giving Tina a heart attack in the process.

The 3 kiddies with some of the weaponry.

That's one big gun.

Almost big enough for Joshua to load Holly in to the barrel!

Another picture of all 5 of us at the Old Battery.

Joshua wearing an military outfit.

Then Brandon's turn.

But Holly wins for the funniest picture wearing the costume. Just adorable with her little feet under the jacket.

Whilst we had our cream tea the kids came running out and placed the coat and hat on Mummy. Not impressed.

So Holly then insisted I had a picture as everyone else had done it.

This is the room where they prepared the bombs for the cannons.

A little re-enactment as the boys demonstrate how the gun powder was poured in to the bombs.

Muscles B push presses a bomb (is it real or not?????).

Final picture from the day as Holly uses up some saver vouchers having another ride on the carousel.
