Spain - Costa Dorada Day 8

Day 8 then and you will be pleased to see no beach, no pool and no aqua splash. I never realised just how close Salous was to Barcelona. So an hour North East and we were in the stunning Metropolitan city of Barcelona which has grown in leaps and bounds since the '92 Olympics. The trip had to be family friendly so we stuck to the Aquarium and the Zoo, but me and Tina both agree that we would love to go back one year for a city break and see some of the other sites.

So the day started at the Aquarium where the entrance is lined with some stunning bamboo plants.

First stop was this large play submarine. Unfortunately the boys saw this before we got to any fish and it was pretty hard work to drag them both away.

One the boys were surgically removed from the submarine we found this interesting tube slide which was clear perspex with water jets whistling around the outside giving a tube/wave type effect.

At last we made it to the fish.

Check out this sea snake.

Brandon posing next to some rays.

And here is a nice picture of me and the boys in the shark tunnel.

Out in the courtyard Brandon got to experience first hand what it is like in a sharks mouth.

What a beautiful little smile as Brandon sits on an over sized turtle.

And once again check out that smile as he climbs into a tunnel and pops his head up in a fish tank bubble.

The aquarium is located right on the Barcelona harbour and boy are there some absolutely stunning boats moored up.

After lunch we then headed 10 mins up the road to Barcelona Zoo. As if the boys hadn't seen enough dolphins already this holiday, first on the agenda was yet another dolphinarium.

Then we got into the animals. I had a bit of trouble explaining the blue noses and red bums of the baboons.

Barcelona Zoo is renowned for its Gorilla enclosures and up until recently housed one of the only albino gorillas in the world. The zoo are now hoping that the albino gene is in one of his offspring to bring back the memories

The boys were absolutely intrigued by the lazy bears.

Some Spanish bloke was feeding this bear ice cream which caused him to rear up the side wall at full stretch.

Regular blog readers might recall our earlier holiday to Minehead where the boys became addicted to donkey rides. Well it was no different in Barcelona and the moment they two boys spotted the donkeys I just knew I was going to be paying out for another ride.

The zoo has some other spectacular animals and very impressive enclosures allowing you very close up viewing.

My favourite the alligator. It was nice to see Joshua and Brandon showing a keen interest in the gators and crocs. Mind you they kept asking me if they were real ones due to the fact that they were motionless.

The picture has not come out great but it was actually some kind or large turtle type creature with a long pointy nose. The boys were very intrigued.

Day 9 to follow and its business as usual back in Aqua Splash followed by yet another stunning sand castle sculpture and then finally the boys favourite new game - air hockey!
